Token Women Drawings 2019 – 2020In the Token Women Series 2018 – ongoing I am engaging with replications of original illustrations from a set of 1892 Encyclopaedias’ bought at a school jumble sale. Cherished for a lifetime, the tiny Victorian engravings reflect the absence of females in these tomes of knowledge aimed at celebrating and storing historical fame and success.
The Token Women dot drawings engage with contemporary issues of women’s status and acknowledgement in our society.
The shape and title of each Token Women drawing playfully reflects what 21st Century females still have to organise in order to ‘succeed’ and be acknowledged: Past drawings are titled ‘Circles’, ‘Balance’, ‘Fit’ and ‘Heap’.
Piece 2 was selected by David Remfry for ING DISCERNING EYE 2020
