Drawing The WorldI was one of thirty international post graduate UAL students who were selected to join Prof. Stephan Farthing in Granary Square to ‘Draw the World’. The large scaled drawing was to be achieved by collaboration and negotiation between the peer group. The drawing was filmed as an ariel perspective by a drone at regular intervals, directed via mobile phone. The drawing had a performative element and will be part of the film ‘Drawing The World’ (Release date to be confirmed). The project encompassed the newest 21st century technology drones and iPhones for watching and recording the drawing combined with the oldest natural drawing material of chalk. Working drawings on how to create a scaled world map in Granary Square based on the grids of the water fountains.
We were divided into four groups and told which segment of the world to draw. We then allocated specific country and island contours within the group. Thinking about how to accomplish the actual drawing mark with a piece of large chalk needed reflection.
Finding a position to accomplish a chalk drawing on a cold October brick floor, was quite a challenge. I was curious to know if the individual marks of each artist would be differentiated from the high arial perspective. A still of the drones viewpoint was sent to all the participants at the end of the drawing day. Cleaning the drawing was also a combination of technology and basic tools!
