Rosalind’s playful delicate drawings and sculpture explore personal and domestic yet universal objects.

Her drawing methodologies of using fine dots, lines or frottage on delicate papers to create a drawn dimensional ghosting reflect her interest in the transience and traces of human presence and absence. Rosalind selects the materiality associated with the body, dust, hair, bone and uses delicate cloth or paper as metaphor.

The scale of her work varies from miniature to human life size. Both her drawings and sculptures are accomplished by the repetition and assemblage of small elements.

Beautiful and fragile her work both tempts and repels touch.

Drawn for TREEN (of a tree)during a 2 week residency at Kaleidoscope with @thebridgeartschool

My subject of the jail door built from solid wood with large iron bolts, a hatch, and a peephole is a door to the past barred from a future. It’s height and narrowness intimidate; the scale of the bolts in comparison to the human hand, menace. The closed flap and peephole intimidate the occupant. A thing of dread yet an object of beauty, its craftsmanship with wood and metal admirable.
My drawing practice involves lifting glimpses of surfaces from objects with paper, creating a fragile sculptural graphite and paper ghost of the original object. The process creates a two-sided drawing. The method and physicality of creating these drawings was 10 days ‘Hard Labour’ The process of lifting a surface is intense, exhausting and fretful as the drawing is blind. The object wrapped in paper is not revealed for many days. The drawing contains lifted historical fingerprints, human cells, stains, and oily bolts. Its surfaces bear the hallmarks of many years use and containment.

Screwed sculptural drawing for TREEN (of a tree) L Screwed sculptural drawing for TREEN (of a tree)
Last two weeks closes 6 September 2025 A Sevenoaks Kaleidoscope Art Gallery and Museum collaboration.

My second drawing Screwed is based on a cabinet maker’s screwdriver from around 1800. Seeing this large ornate implement in the Museum cabinet initiated the following questions What is it? Are both sides different? Why is it so big and decorative? Why does it have my initials RB on it?
Looking and initially not reading I had assumed it was a chisel. Humans were smaller in height and weight in the 1800’s so wielding this would require strength and dexterity.
I felt it had companionship with the Jail door, either as part of the craftsmanship in its construction or as a means of escape.

These two objects, that in my mind have connection, were ripe for reimagination via graphite and paper impression.

Rosalind playfully enfolded copies of the FT newspaper, muddying the meanings by washing texts with
gesso, rubbing textures into the fine and pliable paper, adding graphite on lipstick pink mulberry paper, vibrant acrylic, ink and thread in hues of pink. The multiple media drawings mimic her thinking, upbeat and fun they dissolved and evolved in shape and form.
The world and our understanding of the world’s real and imagined complexity has shifted. Her selection of the Financial Times newspaper as her support and subject is pertinent. Newspapers both reveal and conceal truth, regarded as a throw away
object ‘old news’ they currently face the issue that content is outdated before it is printed. But the FT is a paradox, an historical document founded in 1888 its words and images lineage fix time frames. Its presence in the British Library contradicts its
flimsy nature as both object and content. Its unbleached hue
makes it noticed and environmentally in sync.

Delighted to be showing in LOADED COLOUR an innova Delighted to be showing in LOADED COLOUR an innovative vibrant celebratory exhibition that explores the multifaceted work of Cherie Lubbock and the nature of the colour pink through collaborative artistic responses with invited artists Donald Smith, Sarah Cliff, Louisa Crispin, Sue Evans and myself.

An inspirational day chatting all things Pink in Cherie’s studio on the Hampshire/Sussex borders commenced our six-month collaboration. @donaldsmithstudio @cliff_sarah @louisacrispin @sue44evans @cherielubbock

For my piece ‘Fragile Foundations’ I playfully enfolded copies of the FT newspaper, muddying the meanings by washing texts with gesso, rubbing textures into the fine and pliable paper, adding graphite on lipstick pink mulberry paper, vibrant acrylic, ink and thread in hues of pink.

These upbeat and fun sculptural drawings mix with my thinking. Since this collaboration commenced six months ago the world and our understanding of the worlds real and imagined complexity has shifted. In my recent work my selection of the FT newspaper as support and subject is pertinent. Newspapers both reveal and conceal truth, regarded as a throw away object ‘old news’ they currently face issues that content is outdated before it is printed. But the FT is a paradox, founded in 1888 its historical presence in the British Library contradicts its flimsy nature as both object and content, while Its unbleached hue still makes it noticed amongst its rivals it is environmentally in sync.

Intuitive manipulation of these chosen materials unique properties was predominately experimental where the abstract paper sculptures evolved and dissolved in shape and form. Entitled Fragile Foundations they resonate with my drawing practice, my thoughts and pay homage to this joyous collaboration with Cherie.

Tova McKenzie-Bassant PASSAGES Exploring and ancho Tova McKenzie-Bassant
PASSAGES Exploring and anchoring the past through assemblage – where heritage and history meet.
Now – 15 March 2025

Join us for refreshments at thePrivate view tonight Friday 28 February 6– 8.00
The evening will include a short film followed by a Q&A with the artist.

Passages’ is a solo exhibition by the artist Tova McKenzie-Bassant, presenting three bodies of assemblage, (Tokens for the Journey, Silent Witnesses and Uncle Joe’s Bowl), brought together to form this piece, and chronicles journeys made by so many, both geographically and personally, from distant homelands to the shores of England.

Tova McKenzie-Bassant is a British artist of Jamaican heritage, whose practice centres on collage, photography, assemblage, and poetry. Born in the UK toAsian and African parents, exploring the hidden effects of marginalisation on Black British people is of particular interest; as well as the complexities of fitting or not fitting into countries of birth, the struggle to manage conflicting identity values while occupying multiple identity spaces, and the internal conflicts that arise from the feeling of being without ‘a voice’.

Tova attended Putney School of Art and Chelsea School of Art before studying at Goldsmiths College. She lived and worked in London and Athens before eventually settling in Sevenoaks.

Thank you to the brilliant artist and curator @ad Thank you to the brilliant artist and curator @adamgreenart Adam’s Gallery for inviting me to create new drawings for the exhibition ‘When Palmer Met Blake 1824-2024’ Now exhibiting until 3 November

Great to attend the PV, catch up with fellow artists and find my work in the midst of works by Samuel Palmer, William Blake, Graham Sutherland, John Nash, Paul Drury, many more historical and contemporary artists.

Bit about the two pieces I am exhibiting ‘How lovely it looked ... strained through the tissue paper’ A pencil and tissue paper sculptural drawing and ‘The Whirlwind’ Pencil, printing ink and thread on cartridge paper

Reflecting on the passage from a written description of Blake and Palmers first meeting as recounted in the excellent Palmer biography by @rachelcampbelljohnston I was attracted to two details. Blakes social life at 69 had become little more than a venture to ‘fetch a jug of porter’ and Palmer writes during that meeting of peeping at a Blake copperplate ‘How lovely it looked by lamplight strained through the tissue paper’.

Taking part of this comment as my title, the strong sculptural shape of a porter jug but ghostly tissue paper as a support for my drawings fed my inspiration. Rejecting the new drawings from many of Palmers pastoral landscape drawings of moons, churches and sheep I finally selected to draw my marks after a painting by Palmer ‘The Bright Cloud’ 1834.
The Whirlwind was inspired by the movement in the William Blake Pen and watercolour ‘The Lovers Worldwind’ an illustration for Dante- The Divine Comedy 1824 – 27’
The Palmer and Blake works that I selected for my response were completed after their meeting in 1824.

Thank you to @adamgreenart artist and curator of A Thank you to @adamgreenart artist and curator of Adam’s Gallery for the invitation to create new sculptural drawings for this ambitious new exhibition ‘When Palmer met Blake’. Featuring works by Samuel Palmer, William Blake, Graham Sutherland, Paul Drury and many invited contemporary artists.
More about my pieces in later posts.

When Palmer met Blake
1824 to 2024
Now - 3 November
On October 9th 1824 Samuel Palmer’s ‘never to be forgotten first interview’ with William Blake took place at Fountain Court, a tall, plain and rather morose red brick building on the Strand. This first meeting was to have a profound effect on the young artist and would create a friendship that lasted until Blake’s death.

Adam’s Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition and series of events to commemorate this first encounter.

Palmer spent the last twenty years of his life in Reigate and is buried in St Marys Church yard along with his wife Hannah.

During his years in Reigate Palmer created many works of art including watercolours and etchings. He is also known to have entertained the Pre Raphaelites at his home.

In the 1920’s Palmers largely forgotten etchings were rediscovered by a group of artists studying at Goldsmiths University. In particular Graham Sutherland and Paul Drury.

Sutherland and Drury and others went on to create a body of work inspired by Palmers Pastoral vision and his unrivalled skills as a printmaker.

The exhibition will feature works by Palmer, Blake, Sutherland and Drury as well as many others including contemporary artists who have been invited to create a piece of work for the show.

A series of events will also take place during the course of the exhibition.

These include drypoint etching workshops, private gallery tours with drinks and canapers and a talk on Samuel Palmer next to the churchyard where he is buried.
